How to Adjust Your Skincare for Every Season

Your skin isn't the same in January as it is in July — so your routine shouldn't be either. Here's how to adjust it as the seasons shift.
Winter: focus on barrier repair
Cold air and indoor heating strip moisture fast. Switch to a richer, cream-based moisturizer, and consider adding a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid underneath. Cut back on strong exfoliants if your skin feels tight or flaky — a compromised barrier needs calm, not more actives.
Spring: ease actives back in
As humidity returns, skin tends to tolerate more. This is a good time to slowly reintroduce retinoids or stronger exfoliants if you dialed them back in winter. Go slow — one new active at a time, a few weeks apart.
Summer: lighten up and double down on SPF
Swap heavy creams for gel-based or lightweight lotions. Sweat and humidity make heavier formulas feel greasy and can contribute to breakouts. This is also the season to be strictest about sunscreen — reapply every two hours if you're outdoors, not just once in the morning.
Fall: repair and prep
After a summer of sun exposure, skin often needs extra support. Antioxidant serums (vitamin C, niacinamide) help address damage, and it's a good time to reintroduce or increase retinoid use as the weather cools and skin becomes more tolerant again.
The one constant
Sunscreen doesn't take a season off, and neither should you. Everything else — texture, richness, actives — can flex with the weather. Pay attention to how your skin actually feels each month rather than following a fixed routine year-round.
